The Recording Process
1) - Pre-Production. Pre production is done before the artist enters the studio. It is suggested that a "boom box" recording of each song be done before the recording sessions begin. At a minimum, all the songs should be written out with notes on specific instruments that will be used, vocal parts, etc 2) - Tracking. Tracking is recording the rythm tracks for each song. This is usually done with only the rythm instruments (drums, bass, rythm guitar), but sometimes involves other instruments. A "scratch" vocal is usually recorded for reference. Each tracking session starts with setting up of microphones, getting proper levels to the recording machines, and getting levels in headphones. 3) - Overdubs. Overdubbing is adding additional instrument or voice tracks (such as lead vocals, harmony vocals, lead guitar, birds chirping, etc.) 4) - Mixing. Mixing is the process of taking all the individual instrument and voice tracks and balancing them so that they sound good together. Effects are added and any editing is done at this stage. Editing is the process of removing unwanted noises, fixing minor timing errors where possible, adding autotune, etc. Once the mix is good, the song is recorded onto a two track (stereo) master. 5) - Mastering. Mastering is the process of taking the mixed songs and arranging them in order, adding final equalizer settings, final compression, and making a reference CD. Mastering is available at Abrahams Closet, but it is highly suggested that this be done in a facility that specializes in mastering. Mastering is less expensive at Abrahams Closet than at most excellent mastering facilities.
The Producers Role
The producer is responsible for coordinating the overall project and will help bring out the best of the artists talents. The producer is a key person and may contribute as little as listening during the recording/mixing/mastering process and making comments, to as much as playing most of the instruments, bringing in specialized recording equipment, etc. Most bands cannot afford an excellent producer, so they will self-produce the recordings. This is fine and works very well in most instances, but it should be determined before hand how to settle un-resolved issues during the project. Voting, designating a specific person to be a tie breaker, or boxing gloves all work well!!!
